Second Step
A Violence Prevention Program for Children

Second Step is a program for schools and families to use to encourage children to get along well with others. The Second Step curriculum was developed by the national Committee for Children and is approved for use by the National Safe and Drug-Free Schools program.

The program focuses on three main areas:

• Empathy

Each child learns to identify and understand others' feelings in order to be a more caring person.

• Impulse Control
Children learn to slow down and use problem-solving skills to think through options when faced with dilemmas.

• Anger Management
In most families, anger and conflict are a normal part of family life. The anger management steps help children recognize, understand, and control anger in a healthy way.
